Mike's

I
thought it would be cool to play inside a structure
so I decided to build a hollow terrain with lots
of room for mechs to move around in. The original
concept was for something more like gently-rolling
hills, but the height of mechs and the need to allot
room for hands to move the mechs around meant a
tall structure was necessary. The standard Annihilator,
standing on the fifth tier, gives you a good appreciation
of the Mountains forty-inch height.
As you can see, it's made of cardboard and there
are ten tiers, each three standard levels tall.
There are numerous level two stairs or ramps to
help non-jumping mechs get around. The structure
was a little more spongey than I'd counted on but
it held together nicely.
This terrain had its technical problems but they
were mostly due to FASA's inability to think in
3-D. By that I mean, a mech standing at the foot
of the mountain could be as little as seven horizontal
hexes away from its opponent standing at the top.
This makes no logical sense but FASA never considered
elevation differences in its weapons attacks. |

Here's
an interior view of the upper floors of the Mountain.
The single hex holes in the floor allowed a mach
to either climb, or jump, from level to level. Normally,
we considered the flat, open side as being solid
rock but sometimes we'd play as if it were open
air.
I eventually sold The Mountain to some lucky bidder
on eBay. Its where-abouts are currently unknown. |
