After
I'd
built a dropship to
scale I decided I needed a jumpship, too. Since
a full-sized one was out of the question I built
only a small, battle-damaged section instead. As
you can see, it used a centrally-aligned pivot
which allowed us to rotate the hull in order to
make movement easier.
The
Plastech mechs (metal ones were too heavy)
stayed in
place via a small, strong magnet epoxied to their
feet, and each hex of the terrain had a metal
washer
glued to it. It worked well but
weighed about 50 pounds.
The weight actually worked in its favor as it helped
it stay in place once it was spun into position.
Unfortunately, it
had a fatal flaw, due to FASA's
inability to think
in 3D. In this terrain you could literally reach
out and touch another 'mech right above you, but
the difference in hex spacing would be too huge
to legally get a shot off. We tried some work-arounds
using rulers but we never really figured this
one
out. We used it once and then it went in storage.
